Trousers below Ankles

Qur’aanic Verse 7.31:

31. Ya banee adama khuthoo zeenatakum AAinda kulli masjidin wakuloo waishraboo wala tusrifoo innahu la yuhibbu almusrifeena

31. O children of Adam! Be well-dressed, clean and tidy at every place of worship, 10 and 11 and eat and drink, but indulge not in extravagance. HE does not indeed like those who indulge in extravagance.

Study Notes:

10. I would like to mention here the insistence of some traditionalists – who consider the ahaadeeth more sacrosanct than even the Qur’aanic Verses – that Muslims should keep the lower ends of their pyjamas and trousers above the ankles. A hadeeth [Sahih Bukhari Volume 7, hadeeth No. 678] tells them that if the garment extends below the ankles, the wearer goes to Hell. And this vital information is not there in the Qur’aan! Therefore the traditionalists believe that without the ahaadeeth, Islam is incomplete. The Qur’aan, on the other hand, reiterates, “… We have neglected nothing in the Book …” (Verse 6.38) and that “… We have certainly explained, in this Qur’aan, every kind of example …” (Verse 17.89). How could the Qur’aan then neglect to mention a thing that would lead a man to Hell!? It cannot, and it does not, because, Allah Almighty, the Author of the Book, cannot be wrong in saying that the Qur’aan has neglected nothing! We are then left with the only conclusion that there is something wrong with the hadeeth, which is man-influenced and therefore error-prone.

11. As this Verse and the one immediately following (7.32) clearly tells us, Allah does not want us to look shabby or uncouth in our dress. One of the purposes of our dress is to make us look better. Allah does not prohibit us this adornment. HE wouldn’t wish us to wear short trousers if these make us look comical. What Allah desires, however, is that we be clean. HE certainly wouldn’t like our trousers to be so long as to collect dirt from the ground as we walk on.

The above is an extract from Qur’aanic Studies Manzil II, which will soon, inshaAllah, be published on Amazon Kindle. Manzil I of the series is already published.

  1. Quran is not saying to cover ankles, not saying to uncover.
What looks good to you is not concern of muslims.
If non-muslims don’t like this, and you are convinced from them, then it is your problem not muslims.

If Rasool(saw) never liked it then we will not do this. You are decider of fashion of muslims or Rasool(saw)?
Ashas bin Sulaim said that his aunt narrated from her uncle that I was walking in Madinah that I heard someone called from behind me that raise your trouser it is more piousness and forlasting, (when I saw) it was Rasoolullah(saw), so I said O Rasoolallah(saw) it is old cloth, He(saw) said do you not have life pattern in me? So I saw that his trouser was upto half of his leg.
عن إياس بن سلمة بن الأكوع عن أبيه قال كان عثمان بن عفان يأتزر إلى أنصاف ساقيه وقال هكذا كانت إزرة صاحبي يعني النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم
Ayaas bin Salamah bin Akwah narrated from his father that Usman bin Affan (3rd righteous caliph) keeps his trouser upto half of his legs and used to say that it was like this trouser of my companion, means Nabi(saw).
عن حذيفة بن اليمان قال أخذ رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم بعضلة ساقي أو ساقه فقال هذا موضع الإزار فإن أبيت فأسفل فإن أبيت فلا حق للإزار في الكعبين
Huzaifah bin Alyamaan said that Rasoolullah(saw) catch a part of my or his leg and said it is location of trouser, if you like then some down, if you like more then (listen) trouser have no right on ankles.

    I see no contradiction it with Quran – but yes Quran says;
    لَقَد كانَ لَكُم فى رَسولِ اللَّهِ أُسوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ لِمَن كانَ يَرجُوا اللَّهَ وَاليَومَ الءاخِرَ وَذَكَرَ اللَّهَ كَثيرًا – الأحزاب – 21
Indeed for you, in Rasoolullah is best pattern, for him who want Allah and day of judgement.

  2. Humayun – I would strongly recommend you open your mind and reflect. Reflect on what you are saying and the folly within it. Reflect that Allah says in the Qur’an that if the rasool adds anything to the law of Allah (as you are clearly saying he did), Allah would have snapped the life vein in his neck!!! The rasool had no right to add anything to Allah’s law.

Please reflect on what you are saying.

  3. Allah calls those who prohibit what He did not prohibit, aggressors, liars and idol-worshipers. Idol-worship is the only unforgivable sin, if maintained till death. See, 5:87, 9:37, 7:32, 6:119, 6:140 and 10:59.

Muhammed is represented only by the Quran. The Prophet Muhammed was the last Prophet and a messenger of God (33:40). He was not the messenger of God because of who he (Muhammed) was, but because he was given the Quran (the message) to deliver to the world. The religion of Islam is a religion of God, not about Muhammed, who was blessed by God with the delivery of the message of the Quran. He did not have an agenda of his own. His job was to deliver to the world what God was giving him, the Quran. See 42:48, 13:40, 5:99-100

Prophet Muhammed cannot prohibit things, or make lawful things on his own. When he tried to do that God admonished him publicly, see 66:1

“O you prophet, why do you prohibit what GOD has made lawful for you, just to please your wives? GOD is Forgiver, Merciful.” 66:1

66:1, reminds us that Allah is the only ONE to prohibit or make things lawful. NO ONE can attribute to Prophet Muhammed a prohibition that Allah did not give him in the Quran. Anyone who tries to do so is admitting his/her refusal of Allah’s words and commandments in the Quran.

Allah does not need any addition to His book. Allah teaches us in the Quran that He does not run out of words and that if He so willed He could have given us hundreds, thousands or millions of books besides the Quran (see 18:109). Since the Quran is complete, perfect and fully detailed, Allah did not give us any more books.

Believers also cannot prohibits any thing which Allah has not

“O you who believe, do not prohibit good things that are made lawful by God, and do not aggress; God dislikes the aggressors.” 5:87

“Say, “Did you note how God sends down to you all kinds of provisions, then you render some of them unlawful, and some lawful?” Say, “Did God give you permission to do this? Or, do you fabricate lies and attribute them to God?” 10:59

    • Jazak Allah khairan

  4. Please be logical. I agree with Mr. Shafee. Why Allah Subhanutallah can put one in Hell if he lets his ankles open? What about offering Salah & observing fast. Don’ t follow fanatism. Allah has taken the responsibility of Quran and not Ahadeeth & one should be aware that Ahadeeth has passed through many hands & people have made changes in a lot.

  5. I wonder how our Moulvi Saheb (Humayun) keeping silent and still not come up with his Dahabalogy to counter Quranic Ayaath. I have added some more Ayaath in support of Quranic Commands

And when they commit an indecency, they say, This is what our fathers used to do and God has enjoined it on us. Say, God does not enjoin what is indecent. Would you attribute to God something of which you have no knowledge?

Behold, God does not disdain to propound a parable of a gnat, or of something [even] less than that. Now, as for those who have attained to faith, they know that it is the truth from their Sustainer – whereas those who are bent on denying the truth say, “What could God mean by this parable?” In this way does He cause many a one to go astray, just as He guides many a one aright: but none does He cause thereby to go astray save the iniquitous

And when Our clear revelations are recited unto them, they who look not for the meeting with Us say: Bring a Lecture other than this, or change it. Say (O Muhammad): It is not for me to change it of my accord. I only follow that which is inspired in me. Lo! if I disobey my Lord I fear the retribution of an awful Day.

And when they commit an indecency, they say, This is what our fathers used to do and God has enjoined it on us. Say, God does not enjoin what is indecent. Would you

We will question those to whom the Messengers were sent, and We will question the Messengers.

God has sealed their hearts and their ears, and their eyes are covered. They will have great torment.

We will question those to whom the Messengers were sent, and We will question the Messengers.

  6. Verse 7:31 says……””Be well-dressed, clean and tidy at every place of worship”
Which means there is no restriction in type of dress, but need to be covered as mentioned in Quran. Then why there is a custom dress (Ihram) for performing Hajj and Umra?

    • Ishram is a symbol for unity of mankind.
